Movie review "A tale of an onion witch".
'A tale of an onion witch' is a Hindi horror short film directed by Piyush Srivastava from 'Pocket films - Indian short films' . This short film is horror yet funny in a twisted way as to how attractive women happen to be a major weakness of young men. The story captures the essence of a horror thriller in a quiet neighborhood which happens to be haunted by a witch.
The story starts as two young bachelors who are good friends. On their quest to find an affordable place they stumble upon this particular flat which happens to be infamous for visits from a witch. They settle on the place after having a good look at the place not knowing what was about to happen. The owner; 'Mangala' aunty warns them about the visits and rumours of a witch who asks for onions after banging on ther door. Sleeping peacefully, the door starts thudding on the tenth day. Not realizing what would happen, one of the friends opens the door only to see a pretty lady all by herself. She claims that her roommate left the keys to the neighbors. So he runs in to check with his friend for the keys. Deep in sleep he ignores him untill he mentions about a girl. A startled young man as he is, he wakes up without hesitation. Answering the door with lust, he denies possession of the keys and invites her instead of letting her wait outside. He offers her coffee while trying to flirt with her by lying to her about reading a book and not being asleep. His friend then pretends go for a jog and give it a try by hitting on her. She then jokingly asks about the story about onions while standing in the kitchen. They have a good time talking until she gulps the coffee down in one go. They are shocked to their core and a little scared as well. She starts making movements like that of a possession and scares the bachelors into the kitchen. Locking themselves in they prepare for options to escape the tyranny of the witch. They remember a suggestion Mangala aunty had made as to what to do when the witch mamages to get in. They bend under sink and start banging the floor. Not having any response for a couple of minutes Mangala aunty shows up claiming the situation is under control. She open the door and give her a tight hug with a sigh of relief until they see the witch. They ask aunty to get her out of here to which she replies that it's her daughter. Both scared and confused men look at each other and ask them to leave. Mangala aunty turns back and asks them if they had answered the question( witch asking for onions). A creepy shot then covers the possessed mother and duo which turns the guys world upside down.
The direction is mediocre but the escalation of the story was abrupt. But the momentum was reasonable and the film could capture the genuine reactions and feelings of bachelors in the situations like these.
I chose this film because it created quite a stir in the short film community having a lot of positive responses. The horror genre with a touch of character qualities was what i was looking for. The film iverall delivered well.
